The official currency is the New Taiwan dollar (TWD), commonly written as NT$. Banknotes in circulation include NT$100, NT$200, NT$500, NT$1,000 and NT$2,000, while coins cover smaller values.
Payment Options When Traveling to Taiwan
For a Taiwan trip, it is useful to carry more than one way to pay. Cash remains handy for small purchases and local businesses, cards work at many larger merchants, and stored-value cards such as EasyCard are especially useful for public transport and participating shops.
