Payment Options When Traveling to Taiwan

For a Taiwan trip, it is useful to carry more than one way to pay. Cash remains handy for small purchases and local businesses, cards work at many larger merchants, and stored-value cards such as EasyCard are especially useful for public transport and participating shops.

01Cash

Useful for night markets, small purchases, some transport and places that do not take your card.

02Credit cards

International cards are accepted at many hotels, department stores and larger merchants; keep a backup in case one network is declined.

03Electronic payments

EasyCard can be used on MRT and buses and at participating stores; top-ups are available at MRT stations and convenience stores.

Keeping Cards and Cash Organized in Taiwan

A small travel wallet can keep your everyday card, transport card and a limited amount of cash together without carrying your full backup supply.

If you use a contactless card, an RFID-blocking sleeve or wallet can reduce unintended scans of compatible cards, but it does not replace normal card-security controls such as transaction alerts and the ability to freeze a lost card.

Keep at least one backup payment method somewhere separate from the wallet you use during the day.

The FurArt wallet below is one compact option if you prefer a dedicated organizer for cards and cash.

Before leaving your accommodation, carry only the cash and cards you expect to use that day.

For current exchange rates, check your bank or a live currency converter close to your travel date rather than relying on an old rate from a travel article.
